Work from Home

Did you know that June 1, 2011 was the unofficial National Work from Home Day in Canada? This push towards a greater focus on flexibility in the workplace in the form of a Work from Home Day has been driven by Workopolis .The campaign started on Social Media giant Facebook and has grown to have over 75,000 Canadian supporters, including several members of parliament.

In this short video, Peter Harris, founder of the Work from Home Day movement discusses the benefits of working from home.  Past MP, Michael Savage also weighs in, discussing the environmental benefits of working from home:

While working from home provides many benefits for employees, employers also have much to gain from supporting this movement. According to Workopolis, nearly 90% of those who work from home at least once per week agree they are more productive.

Other benefits include:

• Reduced operating costs;
• Improved employee morale;
• Increased employee loyalty/retention;
• Greater access to qualified candidates.

What do you think? Did you or someone you know participate in this year’s unofficial Work from Home Day? Do you think giving employees the option to work from home is a good idea?  Share your thoughts here.
